Foxconn has raised wages in China for the second time in less than a week. Their statement included this gem: "While overtime work was always voluntary, this wage increase will reduce overtime work as a personal necessity."
The PBS documentary Global Voices: China Blue demonstrated the Chinese practice of using two different timecards, one for the actual pay and one to console the client into thinking the employees did not work all night, as they often were forced to do. I wonder which set of timecards Foxconn is referring to now?
To get a raise, you used to have to wine and dine your boss. Now you need to convince some of your co-workers to kill themselves.
